Second in Charge (2IC) – Kalgoorlie Yard
Due to a restructure of our Kalgoorlie Operations, Sykes Transport is currently looking for an experienced transport worker to support our Kalgoorlie Manager in the efficient and safe operations of our Kalgoorlie Depot. This is a Kalgoorlie-based role and any applicants must have full working rights in Australia.
About the company
Sykes Transport has been operating since 1959, originally commencing in Geelong before moving to interstate operations between Victoria and Western Australia. In 1998 the business consolidated operations in Western Australia and now operates primarily between Perth and Kalgoorlie, with a number of contracts servicing other areas throughout the state.
Our Kalgoorlie depot is located in Broadwood (West Kalgoorlie), and comprises approx 12,000 square metres of land and with “Street to Street” access is ideally designed to take advantage of main roads triple road train route. Sykes Transport operates a public weighbridge from our Kalgoorlie Depot, with the ability to weigh off all heavy vehicle combinations.
About the role
Reporting directly to the Kalgoorlie Manager, you will support them in the day-to-day running of the Kalgoorlie yard, taking full responsibility for operations, staff and site in the Manager's absence. The role combines hands-on supervision of yard and drivers with administrative duties, ensuring the yard runs safely, efficiently and in line with company policy at all times.
Key responsibilities
- Coordinate the daily movement of trucks, trailers and freight through the yard
- Assist with allocating work to yard staff and drivers, based on operational priorities
- Plan loading and unloading activities
- Support, guide and monitor yard staff and drivers
- Assist with inductions and on-the-job training
- Operate the weighbridge and accurately process load weights and freight paperwork
- Enter bookings, prepare manifests and maintain freight records in Bustle
- Answer calls and assist with customer enquiries, bookings and pick-up requests
- Maintain timesheets, rosters, leave records and general site administration
- Ensure the yard is clean, organised and professionally presented
- Promote safe work practices, reporting hazards, incidents and near misses
- Help maintain compliance with fatigue management, dangerous goods, controlled waste, load restraint, mass and dimension management.
About you
To be successful, you will have:
- Expertise in transport, logistics, warehousing, freight or yard operations
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage changing priorities
- Confidence communicating with drivers, customers and team members
- Good computer literacy
- A practical understanding of workplace safety and compliance requirements
- A reliable, professional approach and the ability to lead by example
- Experience using a transport management system is desirable (experience with Bustle will be highly regarded)
