About Kalgoorlie

Where Career Ambition Doesn’t Come at the Cost of a Balanced Lifestyle

Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a dynamic regional centre in Western Australia, located in the heart of the Eastern Goldfields. Founded during the gold rush era of the 1890s, Kalgoorlie has a rich history of enterprise, resilience and cultural heritage. Over a century later, that pioneering spirit remains, but now it's matched with a modern lifestyle, thriving local economy, and a strong sense of community.

With more than 30,000 residents, Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a welcoming and diverse community, where people come for the opportunity and stay for the lifestyle.

Locals enjoy a wide range of cafés, pubs, restaurants and bars. Plus the town’s grand architecture, lining streets from a bygone era, offers a striking window into life at the height of the gold rush.

A Golden Past and a Bright Future

Kalgoorlie’s story began in 1893, when prospectors Paddy Hannan, Tom Flanagan and Dan O’Shea struck gold just outside town. Their discovery sparked one of Australia’s greatest gold rushes and laid the foundations for one of its most iconic mining towns.

Today, Kalgoorlie-Boulder remains one of the world’s leading mining and resource hubs, and is home to the ‘Super Pit’, one of Australia's largest open-cut gold mines. But its economy has expanded far beyond just the resource sector. Industries such as education, tourism, construction and professional services are all thriving, creating opportunities across the board.

Gateway to the Goldfields

Kalgoorlie sits at the heart of Western Australia’s Goldfields, and is surrounded by other historic towns such as Coolgardie, Kambalda, Menzies and Norseman, each with its own unique story and contribution to the region’s proud heritage.

Plus, with Perth just a one-hour flight or a day’s drive away, Kalgoorlie offers the ideal blend of regional lifestyle and state-wide connectivity.
